My Personal Story

Published on 4 November 2025 at 18:57

My name is Maria van Erp, I'm single, mother of a daughter and a son, and I have two granddaughters. When my children were young, I lived in the south of the Netherlands, and from 2010 to 2019, I lived in Amsterdam with my second husband.

In 2020, I unexpectedly found myself in Playa del Carmen. My husband had died after an illness in 2019, and I was experiencing numerous health problems, including my lungs. The strict regulations and the advancing pandemic prompted me to travel with an acquaintance, who also had health problems, to visit his family in Miami, Florida.

We traveled via Madrid and caught the last plane to Florida. However, the plane didn't go to Florida, but stopped in Cancun, Mexico. From that moment on, the world went into lockdown.

During the two and a half years I lived in Mexico, I spent the first few months in Cancún and later in Playa del Carmen. The initial time in Cancún was a real struggle to survive. Hotels were going bankrupt, so you didn't know where you'd be sleeping the next night. Through the intervention of the Rotary Club, I later moved with two friends to an apartment in Playa del Carmen. A few months later, we moved to a country house in a residential area between Playa del Carmen and Cancún.

I really enjoyed living there. You could walk with the dogs in the woods, swim, and play tennis. And if you were lucky, the monkeys would come cheering you on in the trees.

That was an amazing experience!
